The "What If" Game

Three years ago this month, I was standing at the window of a film company in Grand Rapids, Michigan, watching the traffic below. At the time, the plan was to join them as a film editor and assistant writer.

Now I'm a sergeant in the Army, with soldiers to train for war, and the war itself to deal with. It's a far throw from film editing, that's for sure.Posted by Picasa

Could you picture yourself being the person you are now if you hadn't joined the Army at all?

Ya, that's the rub. It's hard to regret any part of your life, good or bad, since every day and every experience has made you the person you are.

Just because something could have been doesn't mean it would have been. Moreover, we wouldn't know what it would have been like had we not gone through X or Y. Even if I had been with that particular company, I would have been looking back, wondering how things might have been if I joined the Army.

Crazy.
